White-water Geckoing on the Soča
Try white-water geckoing, available only with us!
Geckoing on the Soča River is one of the most cheerful and playful white-water programmes around Bovec. The biggest advantage of geckoing is that it gives you a carefree, playful and laughter-filled experience from the very first moment. It is not like a classic rafting tour where several people sit in one large boat; here, because of the smaller, lighter and more manoeuvrable equipment, your connection with the river is much more direct. You feel the current of the Soča carrying you, you have to react to the waves, and every movement becomes part of the shared game.
What is geckoing?
Geckoing is a guided white-water programme completed by participants using smaller, colourful, inflatable water equipment. Compared to classic rafting, it provides a more playful, more direct and more active experience.
You do not steer the gecko with a paddle, but with your own body: by shifting your weight, holding on and making small movements, you react to the water. This is what makes the experience truly funny and lively, since every movement you make affects how the gecko turns, slides or wobbles underneath you.
What kind of experience should you expect?
During geckoing, you will discover the more playful side of the Soča River. The guides choose the right section based on the water level, the age, experience and mood of the group. If you arrive with children, the goal is a safe, easy-to-follow and cheerful experience. If you are a sportier group of friends, the tour can also be more dynamic, faster and more technical.
Why is geckoing special compared to classic rafting?
Classic rafting is a more stable, more team-centred experience where you paddle together in a larger boat. Geckoing, by comparison, is more personal and direct: you are closer to the water, you feel the waves more strongly, and you take a more active part in moving forward. This often makes the tour funnier, livelier and more spontaneous.
It is not better or worse than rafting, but a programme with a different character. Rafting is a good choice if you want a more stable, classic white-water experience. Geckoing is ideal if you are looking for a more playful, relaxed, cheerful and slightly “crazy” Soča adventure.
What is included in the participation fee?
The participation fee includes the guided gecko tour, the necessary white-water equipment, the life jacket, the helmet, the neoprene suit, the neoprene shoes, the paddle, Hungarian-language guiding, and the transfer between the base and the river.
The price does not include the river usage fee. A separate river usage fee is payable on the Soča River. This tour usually takes place on the middle section of the river, where the fee is 3-6 € /person, depending on the season. The fee must be paid on site.
The photo package is also an optional extra. After the tour, you can view the photos in an online album, so you can conveniently decide afterwards whether to purchase the digital album.
How does the gecko tour work in short?
1. Arrival at the HungaroRaft base in Bovec
The tour starts from the HungaroRaft base in Bovec, located in the centre of Bovec. It is worth arriving at least 15 minutes before the agreed time. This is where administration takes place, you meet the guides and receive your personal equipment.
2. Equipment and transfer to the river
Every participant receives the equipment needed for the tour: neoprene suit, neoprene shoes, life jacket, helmet and gloves. After that, the group leaves by transfer to the river, which is about a 10-minute drive.
3. Safety briefing before entering the water
On the riverbank you change clothes, then the guide gives a short safety and paddling technique briefing. They explain how to use the Gecko, how to react to the current, what to pay attention to on the water, and what instructions must be followed during the tour.
4. Geckoing on the Soča River
The time spent on the water is about 1 hour. During this time, easier, playful sections, waves, sections with more current and lots of laughter await you. The section to be completed is always chosen based on the water level, safety conditions and the composition of the group.
5. Return to the base
At the end of the tour, you change into dry clothes and return to the Bovec base by minibus. You can view the photos taken of the experience after the tour in an online photo album.
We capture your memories
This cheerful and playful white-water programme would be a shame not to capture. That is why photos can optionally be taken during the tour. During the programme, the guides capture the best moments with OM System Tough cameras, so you do not need to take your own phone or camera onto the water.
After the tour, you can look back at the best moments in an online album, and you can decide afterwards whether to purchase the photo package. The price of the photo package is 24 €.
Why choose the HungaroRaft team?
Geckoing is a light and cheerful programme, but safety is also the foundation here. The HungaroRaft team works with 28 years of experience and qualified guides, who adapt the tour to the age and courage of the group and to the current water level.
For Hungarian guests, a clear Hungarian-language briefing and communication is a special advantage: you understand exactly what to do, what to pay attention to, and how the water game becomes a safe shared adventure. This can be especially important for families and for a first white-water experience.
Who is geckoing on the Soča a good choice for?
Geckoing is for those who are looking for a cheerful, active and playful white-water programme around Bovec. Geckoing is not classic rafting and it is not kayaking: it offers an easy-to-love, lively experience with lots of laughter somewhere between the two.
This tour is a good choice for those who...
...are looking for an active water programme, but do not want an overly technical or extreme white-water challenge. Geckoing is easy-to-moderate in difficulty, so it is exciting enough to be a real adventure, but in guided form it is also enjoyable for families and beginners.
We especially recommend it for
- families from age 6;
- smaller groups of friends;
- active couples;
- those looking for a beginner white-water experience;
- those who enjoy being in the water;
- those looking for a more playful programme than classic rafting;
- groups with mixed levels of courage, where flexible section selection is important.
Who do we not recommend it for?
We do not recommend this tour for those specifically looking for an extreme, technical, high-adrenaline white-water programme. Geckoing is a cheerful, easy-to-moderate tour, so it may feel too playful and easy for experienced rafters or advanced white-water athletes.
It is also not ideal if someone cannot swim, panics in water, has a serious health condition, or cannot follow the guide’s instructions.
Important information and conditions
Geckoing on the Soča River is an easy-to-moderate guided white-water programme. It is not an extreme sport, but it requires active participation: you need to pay attention to the guide, cooperate, and feel comfortable in a water environment.
What does class I–III white water mean?
Class I–II white water means easy-to-moderate difficulty. This is a white-water level that can be enjoyable for beginners and families, but it still requires active attention and water confidence.
Class I sections are calmer, easy to follow and mainly good for getting into the rhythm. On class II sections, smaller waves, turns with more current and more playful water situations may already appear.
Important: class III white water is not part of the basic family/beginner tour. It is a sportier section with a greater individual challenge, typically recommended from age 12 for more adventurous participants, and available on a different section upon special request.
In practice, for geckoing this means that the programme is not extreme, but it is not a completely passive water experience either. You steer the gecko with your body, so it is important to listen to the guide, enjoy the water, and not be frightened if the Soča wobbles, turns or splashes around you.
- Swimming ability: Basic water confidence and swimming ability are required for cheerful, carefree fun. The life jacket keeps everyone afloat, but it is important not to panic in the water.
- Age limit 6+: Geckoing is generally recommended from the age of 6. Exact participation may also depend on the current water level, weather and the decision of the guide. Under the age of 18, parental supervision or parental consent is required to take part in the tour.
- Weight limit: Due to the standard sizing of the safety equipment, the maximum weight limit is 95 kg; above this, the equipment becomes very unstable. If you are close to this, please let us know in advance.
- Health: Participation in the tour requires a sober state, free from intoxication. It is not possible to take part in the tour under the influence of alcohol or mind-altering substances.
- Physical condition: You do not need to be an athlete, but basic mobility, stamina and cooperation are required. The tour is not recommended in the case of serious cardiovascular or musculoskeletal problems or recent injuries.
- Safety: Before getting on the water, every participant receives a safety briefing. During the tour, the guide’s instructions must always be followed.
- Weather and water level: The programme can also take place in rain, but the route or departure may change depending on the current water level and safety considerations.
- River usage fee: A separate river usage fee is payable on the Soča River. This tour usually takes place on the middle section of the river, where the fee is 3-6 € /person, depending on the season. The fee must be paid on site. Further details can be found at www.gosoca.si.
- Exclusive condition of participation: signing the liability waiver.
- Insurance: Travel insurance extended to cover extreme sports is mandatory, and you can also arrange it through our website.
