Family Whitewater Rafting on the Soča

A Safe Adventure with Children

Give yourselves over to a shared family adventure! HungaroRaft’s Family Rafting tour is designed specifically for families with young children (from age 4) and beginners on the gentlest, crystal-clear section of the Soča River. During the tour, Hungarian-speaking guides help both children and parents. This program is not about extreme whitewater; it is about paddling together, sliding, water games, and giving children a safe introduction to whitewater rafting. It can become a lifelong shared memory where you are the main characters and responsibility is ours.

The full program takes about 2.5–3 hours, of which you spend roughly 1 hour 20 minutes on the water. HungaroRaft provides the equipment, child-sized life jackets, helmets, wetsuits, and the transfer between the base and the river.

What is family rafting?

Family rafting is a lighter whitewater rafting experience designed for families arriving with children, beginners, and multi-generational groups. The tour takes place on a calmer river section, using stable raft boats, child-friendly equipment, and experienced guides. The aim is not extreme adrenaline, but a safe shared experience, play, and discovering nature.

Why is family rafting with children a good choice?

The Soča River is one of Europe’s most spectacular Alpine rivers: with its crystal-clear turquoise water, pebbly banks, and mountain-surrounded valley, it is already a special experience in itself. On the family rafting tour, you explore an easier, child-friendly section of this river, where the water is playful but not too wild.

This program is a good choice if the family would like something more active than going to the beach, but is not looking for an extreme sport. Children can paddle, observe the river, play in the water, and experience what a real whitewater program feels like – with parental presence, in a guided environment, and with the right equipment.

Family rafting is especially recommended for those trying whitewater rafting for the first time. At the beginning of the program, the guides explain the basics, show the paddling technique, and introduce the most important safety rules in a playful way.

Why is Hungarian-language guiding an advantage?

Going on the water with children is truly relaxing when everyone understands what is happening. Hungarian-language guiding is especially important during family rafting because children hear the instructions, encouragement, and playful tasks in their own language.

This is not only a matter of convenience. When a child understands exactly what to do, they calm down more quickly, join the program more easily, and feel safer. This also makes it easier for parents to let go of worry and truly enjoy the program together.

This is how the Family Rafting tour works in brief

1. Meeting at the HungaroRaft base

The program starts at the HungaroRaft base in Bovec. Here you meet the guides, receive the necessary information, and get ready for the tour. At the base you can change comfortably, and before departure every participant receives equipment in the appropriate size.

2. Equipment distribution

We provide a life jacket, helmet, wetsuit, neoprene shoes, and paddle for the tour. Children receive child-sized life jackets and helmets so the equipment is comfortable and safe for them.

3. Transfer to the river

From the base, we take the group by minibus to the starting point. The transfer is short (10 minutes), so it is not tiring for children either, and the program starts smoothly.

4. Safety briefing

Before getting on the water, the guide explains the basics of paddling, the rules for sitting in the boat, the important commands, and how to behave on the water. For children, we explain all of this in a simple, understandable, and playful way.

5. Paddling, play, and shared experience

The time spent on the water is about 1 hour 20 minutes. During the tour you paddle, pass through smaller waves, may stop for playful water tasks, and, if the water level is suitable, there may also be an opportunity for sliding or safe jumps into the water. The program is always adapted to the current conditions and the composition of the group.

6. Return to the base

At the end of the tour, the minibus takes you back to the HungaroRaft base, where you can change, view the photos that were taken, and comfortably finish the shared family adventure.

What does the participation fee include?

The participation fee includes the guided family rafting tour, the necessary whitewater equipment, the life jacket, helmet, wetsuit, neoprene shoes, paddle, Hungarian-language guiding, and the transfer between the base and the river.
The price does not include the river usage fee. This is a mandatory municipal tax, the price of which (3-21 €/person for adults) may vary depending on the chosen river section and the season. On the easiest “Panorama” section, where family rafting usually takes place, 3-6 €/person/adult and 2.5-5 €/person/child is payable.
It also does not include the optional photo package. If you like the pictures, you can purchase the digital album after the tour.

We capture the experience

The best thing about family whitewater rafting is when everyone is fully part of the experience: the children, the parents, and the whole team. You do not need to worry about your phone or your own camera getting wet, because photos can optionally be taken during the tour. During the program, the guides may capture the best moments with OM System Tough cameras: paddling together, laughter, water games, and those family scenes that will be wonderful to look back on later.

After the tour, you can view the pictures in an online album, and you only decide to purchase them if you would like to keep them. The price of the photo package is 24 €.

Who do we recommend the family rafting tour for?

We primarily recommend family rafting for families with young children, beginners, multi-generational families arriving with grandparents, and groups of friends where the participants are not looking for an extreme challenge, but for a shared water experience.

The program is recommended from age 4, with parental supervision. It is important that the child likes water, does not get scared if water splashes in their face, and is able to follow the guide’s simple instructions. Professional swimming ability is not required; water confidence, attention, and cooperation are what matter.

Adults do not need any previous rafting experience either. Average physical fitness is sufficient because the tour takes place on an easy water section, and the pace is adapted to the group and the current water level.

What does class I–II+ whitewater mean?

Class I–II+ whitewater means an easy, beginner-friendly river section. In this case, there may be smaller waves, bends, and playful currents on the water, but you should not expect large rapids or technically difficult obstacles.

We choose the family rafting section so the program can also be enjoyed with children. The aim is for participants to experience the atmosphere of whitewater rafting while the tour remains safety-focused, easy to follow, and family-friendly.

Who is family whitewater rafting not recommended for?

We do not recommend family whitewater rafting for those looking for a more extreme, more technical, or stronger whitewater adventure. This tour is specifically child-friendly and has an easier pace, so it may be too calm and less exciting for experienced rafters, adrenaline-seeking groups of friends, or participants who want more serious rapids.

It will also not be the best choice if someone expects longer, more intensive paddling, bigger waves, or a sportier challenge. For them, Classic Rafting, the Soča Rafting Expedition, or a more advanced whitewater program may be a better alternative.

Safety and child-friendly equipment

Safety comes first in family rafting. We use stable multi-person raft boats that suit the easier Soča section and the nature of a family program well. Children receive special attention: the guides focus not only on steering the boat, but also on making sure the younger participants understand what is happening around them and feel confident on the water.

The whitewater program takes place in a natural environment, so a completely risk-free water tour does not exist. That is why it is important for every participant to follow the guide’s instructions. The chosen section, pace, and playful elements are always adapted to the current water level, weather, and the abilities of the group.

We provide child-friendly equipment

  • Large, stable boats: On Family tours, we use large, classic raft boats for 4-6-8 people. These are extremely stable, “uncapsizable” on this water section, so even the youngest participants feel safe.
  • Special life jackets: We have collared life jackets specifically designed for young children (from age 4), which keep them afloat even if they cannot swim.
  • Helmet and clothing: The helmets are adjustable, and the wetsuits keep little ones warm even in cooler water.

Participation requirements:

  • Water confidence: Professional swimming ability is not a requirement for family whitewater rafting because every participant wears a highly buoyant life jacket. However, it is important that the child likes water, does not get scared if their face gets wet, and does not panic in the water.
  • 4+ age limit: The tour is available from the age of 4 with parental supervision. This minimum age is important because of the sizing of the special children’s life jackets and safe participation. For children, parental presence or consent is required for participation.
  • Weight limit: Due to the equipment and the load capacity of the boats, the maximum weight limit is 120 kg/person. If you are unsure about participation, it is worth consulting us in advance.
  • Health: You can only take part in the tour in a sober, clear-headed state. Participation is not allowed under the influence of alcohol or mind-altering substances. In case of pregnancy, rafting is not recommended, and expectant mothers may not take part in the program.
  • Physical condition: This tour counts as light physical activity, can be completed with average fitness, and does not require previous paddling experience. In case of serious spinal, heart, or nervous system problems, epilepsy, a recent injury, or serious musculoskeletal complaints, please consult a doctor before departure and inform the guide.
  • Safety: Before getting on the water, every participant receives a playful, easy-to-understand safety briefing. During the tour, the instructions of the Hungarian-speaking guide must always be followed, as this is the basis of everyone’s safety.
  • Weather and water level: The program can also be held in rain, since you will get wet during the tour anyway. However, the route, departure, or course of the program may change based on the current water level and safety considerations. If the conditions are not suitable for children, safety always takes priority.
  • River usage fee: A separate river usage fee is payable on site on the Soča River. The amount may vary depending on the chosen river section; according to the information on the page, 3 €/person is payable on the easiest “Panorama” section used for the family tour. It is worth checking the current fees and details before booking.
  • Liability waiver: Participation is subject to signing a liability waiver. For children, this is signed by the parent or legal guardian before the tour.
  • Insurance: Although accidents on this section are extremely rare, a condition of participation is that you have travel insurance that is also valid for whitewater rafting. Travel insurance with an extreme sports add-on can also be arranged through our website.

What should you prepare for before the family rafting tour?

Prepare for an easy, child-friendly whitewater program that usually takes about 2.5–3 hours from arrival to return. This includes administration, changing clothes, equipment distribution, transfer, safety briefing, and time spent on the river. You do not need to arrive with special equipment; we provide the necessary rafting gear – helmet, life jacket, wetsuit, and neoprene shoes. You only need to bring swimwear, a towel, a change of clothes, and the personal items needed for the children, so changing before and after the tour is comfortable.

What should you bring?
  • Swimsuit or swim trunks: It is worth putting them on under your clothes already at your accommodation, so changing at the base is quicker.
  • Sunscreen
  • Your own medication: If the child or any family member has asthma, allergies, or takes medication regularly, please make sure to bring it and inform the guide before departure!
  • Dry change of clothes, towel, bag for clothes - for the end of the tour
  • Money or card for separate items if needed.

What should you not take onto the water?
  • Phone, valuable jewellery, glasses that cannot be secured, high-value items. You can leave these in a safe place before the tour.
  • If you wear glasses, it is worth securing them with a strap. For contact lenses, it is recommended to bring spare lenses or glasses as well.

When should you arrive?
At least 15 minutes before the agreed time, because there is also administration, equipment distribution, and group allocation.

What should you expect physically?
This tour counts as light physical activity. Anyone with average fitness can complete it, so we also confidently recommend it for grandparents. It does not require previous paddling experience.

Weather and water level:
The Soča is a cold Alpine river, and the program may change depending on water level and safety conditions.
